Mom's Next Move: Your Guide to Career Transitions
Welcome to the inaugural issue of "Mom's Next Move"! I'm May, and I'm thrilled to embark on this exciting journey with you.
How This All Began
"Mom's Next Move" was born out of countless conversations I've had with moms just like you. Over 1:1 chats and late-night messages, I noticed a common thread: many of us felt stuck, unsure of the possibilities that lay before us, especially when it came to our careers.
I heard stories of moms wanting to return to work but feeling overwhelmed by the change. I listened to others who craved a new direction but didn't know where to start. And I realized something important - we needed a space to explore, share, and grow together.
Why Me?
You might be wondering, "Why is she the one to guide us through this?" Well, let me share a bit of my story.
Over the past six years, my career has come full circle:
I quit my full-time job to pursue a business
I then transitioned from that business to freelancing
And finally, I returned to a full-time job
Each of these transitions taught me valuable lessons:
The courage it takes to leave the security of a full-time job
The challenges and rewards of running your own business
The flexibility (and sometimes unpredictability) of freelancing
The process of re-entering the traditional workforce as a mom
Through it all, I discovered my bigger calling: to help moms like you navigate your own career crossroads. I learned that a career can have multiple facets - what is now called a "portfolio career." And most importantly, I realized that our experiences as moms are invaluable in the workplace.
What to Expect
In "Mom's Next Move," we'll explore:
1. Career Transitions: We'll highlight the many paths available to moms, from returning to work to starting a business and everything in between.
2. Inspiring Mom Stories through our #MomsWhoMoved Series: Each month we will feature a mom who's made a successful transition, offering real-life inspiration and practical tips.

Let's Move Forward Together
Whether you're feeling the itch for change or adapting to unexpected circumstances, remember: your journey doesn't have to be linear. Sometimes, going in circles leads us exactly where we need to be.
I'm here to remind you that your skills are transferable, your experiences are valuable, and it's okay to redefine success on your own terms.

This Week’s Feature: Embracing Change
Change can be scary, especially when it comes to our careers. But it's also where growth happens. In this section, we'll explore strategies for embracing change and making it work for you.
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings - It's normal to feel anxious or uncertain about career changes. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment. Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear - it's moving forward despite it.
2. Take Stock of Your Skills - As moms, we've developed a unique set of skills that are highly valuable in the workplace. These include:
- Multitasking and prioritization
- Crisis management
- Negotiation (ever tried to get a toddler to eat vegetables?)
- Patience and perseverance
- Creativity in problem-solving
Make a list of your skills, including those you've gained through motherhood. You might be surprised at how impressive it looks!
3. Start Small - Big changes don't happen overnight. Break your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Maybe it's updating your resume, taking an online course, or reaching out to old colleagues. Each small step is progress.
4. Build Your Support Network - Surround yourself with people who support your goals. This could be family, friends, or professional connections. Consider joining mom-focused career groups or finding a mentor who's been through a similar transition.
5. Stay Flexible - Remember, there's no one "right" path. Be open to unexpected opportunities and don't be afraid to pivot if something isn't working.
Remember, moms, your career journey is uniquely yours. It's okay if it doesn't look like anyone else's. What matters is that it aligns with your values, utilizes your strengths, and brings you fulfillment.
