The Many Faces of Moms Navigating Career Breaks
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Over the past months, I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with 30+ incredible moms for 1:1 chats. These conversations have been eye-opening, inspiring, and at times, deeply emotional. Behind each story lies a journey of love, sacrifice, and resilience—and a longing to find their way back to a fulfilling professional life.
Here are some of the stories that stood out:
• D’s Story: She left a high-paying corporate job four years ago to care for her child with special needs. While she has no regrets about putting her family first, she wonders if there’s still a place for her in the corporate world.
• M’s Story: After taking a break to care for her two boys, who are now grown, M has started questioning her own self-worth. “Who am I beyond being a mom?” she asked—a question so many moms can relate to.
• A’s Story: A left her job after enduring workplace bullying. The experience shook her confidence and made her doubt whether she even wanted to return to a professional setting.
• C’s Story: Despite excelling in her role, C faced discrimination as a mother. She was passed over for a promotion simply because she had kids, leaving her feeling undervalued and frustrated.
What These Stories Have in Common
While each journey is unique, I’ve noticed common threads among the moms I’ve spoken with:
Sacrifice for Family: Every mom I’ve met made career decisions based on what they believed was best for their family. Whether it was stepping back to care for children or prioritizing their mental health after workplace challenges, their sacrifices reflect their unwavering love.
A Shift in Identity: Many moms struggle with a sense of lost identity after years away from work. Questions like “Am I still capable?” or “What do I bring to the table?” are incredibly common.
Barriers to Reentry: From outdated skills to workplace discrimination, moms often face systemic challenges when trying to reenter the workforce. Yet, their determination to rise above these obstacles is awe-inspiring.
Resilience and Hope: Despite setbacks, these moms are determined to make their next move. They’re exploring new skills, rebuilding their confidence, and dreaming of a career that aligns with both their professional goals and personal values.
My Biggest Takeaway
Moms are some of the most resilient individuals you’ll ever meet.
They may step away from their careers, but they never lose the drive, skills, and potential that made them successful in the first place.
If you’re a mom navigating a career break, know this:
• You are not alone.
• Your experiences—both personal and professional—are valid and valuable.
• There is a path forward, and it’s never too late to start writing the next chapter of your story.
